(FC) Free Choice: Having a Learning Disability

Last year, my school informed me that I have dyscalculia, a learning disability that affects the way I process math. Having an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) isn't the easiest thing to cope with. Having an IEP means that I need a secondary resource teacher to make sure I understand what is going on in the classroom. I have more work than other students because everyday after school I need to go over the notes I took in class and write another set of notes in the way I understand them. Having the disability sometimes makes me doubt myself and wonder, “Why can't I learn like everyone else? My life would be much easier.” Sometimes I come across people who treat me differently because I don’t learn in the same way, but I’m really just a regular student like them. I ignore their behavior and don’t let it affect me. People’s negative opinions make my passion to conquer this disability stronger.

My teachers expect a lot from me academically. They hold me to a high standard to prepare me for college, where I may not have the same resources. When I go to college, my learning disability won't affect any goals I want to accomplish. I’m the type of individual that likes to challenge myself, so I know I will succeed in the next phase of my education. I want to prove to kids that also have a disability that they can make it too.

Interdisciplinary Post (ID)

In my Banking and Finance class we had to develop a budget for a full time college student. We basically had to fit a budget depending on the scenario my partner and I was given. The scenario was how she has a part time school-aid job at Thurgood Marshall Academy. My partner and I had to find a budget for her because she has many desires. The main important part of this budget is she wanted to find her own place to live because her parents weren't supporting her anymore. We had to go against each other first and present this in front of judges so we can go to the next round which is to present this in front of the regional judges. So we basically had to go against each other, and who ever won goes to the next round and goes against the other boroughs from Capital One. When the day came to present it was so nerve racking. My partner chooses for us two to go first which even got me more nervous. She said she decided to go first because "she wanted to get it over with." So I just went with it; it was time for us to start presenting. We introduced ourselves to the judges then we finally started. As the slides were changes I kept on forgetting what I was going to say. I guess I was too nervous to actually remember. Good thing I had my flash cards with me so that saved me from looking stuck, and sound like I'm saying something complexly different.  We finally finished presenting and sadly my partner and I lost. Even though we lost I still felt like a winner!

Self-Selected Response "SSR"

Quote:“More Pictures. The mind drinks less and less. Impatience. Highways full of crowds going somewhere, somewhere, somewhere, nowhere.”
Group Question:“Does putting pictures in books stop people from thinking?”

I don’t think that by putting pictures in books it stops people from thinking; it actually should keep them from thinking more, and exploring more on what they are seeing in their minds. By putting pictures in books it allows the reader to have a clear image instead of reading to get the image on what the author is talking about. When seeing the image already in front of you; you can conclude what’s happening in the picture, make assumptions, and think about what is going to happened next throughout the story.
When reading to actually get an image you might conclude wrong and just misinterpret the entire story. Yes, it does add a mystery but when you already have the image right in front of you, and see what the author is trying to describe to you makes it way easier to understand what’s going on, and you can draw more accurate conclusions. In the book “FAHRENHEIT 451” by: Ray Bradbury it explains, “More Pictures. The mind drinks less and less. Impatience. Highways full of crowds going somewhere, somewhere, somewhere, nowhere.”  This quote states in my opinion, if there’s more pictures you don’t really need to have a mystery and think/guess more on what the author is trying to tell you. Instead the mind is drinking less, but is still making conclusions based on the picture the author has already provided for the reader.
Which proves that just because the author has pictures for the reader it doesn't mean it “stops people completely from thinking.” A lot of this books is a mystery; meaning that you have to read a lot to just develop a clear image on what the author is saying which makes it confusing for me, when I could just have a detailed image with a few words and have a better understanding on what the author is explaining.

PASSION BLOG (SLEEPING)

For this passion blog I decided to talk about how much I enjoy sleeping. The reason why I choose this is because when I do get the chance to sleep; its like ive never slept before. I'm currently a senior in high school, and the amount of stuff that we have to do throughout the day is really stressful. Such as, passing our classes and making sure that everything is completed and good to go for the next day. Also, the college research, financial aid package, and applying for scholarships as well just adds on to the stress. I am also in a capital one internship that I have to be committed to it 100% and make sure I attend all the meetings and work the internship assigns me to do... this distracts me from doing school work and college research. College is very expensive and I should be applying for the scholarships, but I'm so committed to capital one i don't have the time to spare to study for my SATs nor apply for these scholarships. I don't even have time for myself anymore or to spend time with my family or friends because throughout the weekend I'm really just catching up on my sleep.. and it feels so great to finally lay down and REST! I know that right now things are rough and stressful but I know when I'm walking across that stage in June all of my sleepless nights and hard work will be worth it.

CRR "class related response"

In class yesterday my group and I were all assigned an article to read and answer questions on. All of the articles that we had were based on the same topic. The topic was based on secrets that producers won't tell the public on what they were doing to reality TV. They explain how there is no script, but they have writers who craft plot lines twisting and tweaking footage to create conflict and shape a story out. Also, they explain about how cheap they are; they are always trying to get as much talent as possible while spending as little money as possible. They explain how they are the "masters" of manipulation. They often take different clips and edit them together to sound like one conversation, sometimes drastically changing the meaning. They also lie about how long the job will take them.

I feel like this is not good for society because were watching something that's basically fake when we’re thinking it’s real. At the same time, it shows how easily manipulated the public can be towards reality TV.  Now that I've read this article I know what to expect out of reality TV shows so, I most likely will stop watching them.  What confuses me about this topic is why do producers have to lie to us in the first place? I understand there can be a few edits of course, but why lie and switch stories around to have a conflict start? I feel like this fake conflict that they are trying to appeal to us is destroying society because it makes the public more aggressive than what they already are. Young kids killing each other, bullying etc…There is already a lot going on; we don’t need a reality TV show to make things worse than what it is.

INTRODUCTION-ENGLISH 12

Hello! my name is Love Garcia I'm 18 years old and I am currently attending Thurgood Marshall Academy. I am a senior soon heading to college! I was born and raised in New York City. I love where I'm from, but it would be nice to get out and see different things, as well as meeting different people. While attending college, I would like to have a major and minor. I want to major in Accounting and minor in Finance/Marketing. Last year I wanted to major in Nursing because I had a passion with helping people, but I got the greatest opportunity that I think any teenager in High school would take advantage of gratefully. I got an opportunity to work with Capital One as a Student Banker. With this experience, I decided to change my whole idea around because this made me realize how much I liked working with numbers in general. My roots come from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and France. I love my nationality because of the different types of food we eat, and the music we hear. Especially how we dance to them as well. My father is a manager of an apartment building and my mother is a Police Officer. My little brother that is nine years old is currently attending Elementary School and has a great passion with working at a bank like his big sister or becoming a police officer like our mother.I love going to school, working, and learning new things. As a young lady, I am striving for success so I can be able to come back to my community finally saying "I DID IT, AND SO CAN YOU!"

Piri's Decisions (CRR)

In Ms. Hegemans journalist class we are reading about a Puerto Rican boy from Harlem and his decision makings. Due to his decision making it lead go negative things such as jail. Some people would go though things but usually live and learn from it. Others will repeat their aw mistake on purpose just to get attention. Piri has been through a lot, but if he would've made the right decisions than he wouldn't have to go through alot. I can compare my bad decision makings to Piri because I have made those type of decisions, but I'll usually learn from them as time passes. There was a part in one of the chapters that really caught my attention, and made me realize something about guys in general. In the chapter it explains how he saw a women with blond hair, he was speaking to her than he had sexual intercourse with her in a Feild. Iny opinion hind was very disrespectful, Piri looked interested in her but didn't like her enough to buy a room . Or a bed room because she was white. I think piri makes bad decsions while he's with his friends, but now he looks like he doesn't respect women at all due to what he did with her. As he moves, I believe that it will change him, and make him realize that he is now on his own so he will need to make grown decisions and respectful ones as well. If he doesn't learn from what he's done and he moves one then his life will not will not be In the right track, and he will most likely end up dead or in jail doing time. I look further on reading more about piri's life and what woul happen after he has moved on his own as a independent person.

Weave (FC)

As I noticed a lot of females wear extensions, sow in's, wigs, and braids. Sometimes you don't even know that's weave due to what type of hair people buy. Some lasts more than others. Some would look fake. All depends on the appearance and texted of hair to judge. There are a lot of places that have different hair types on 125th. But I believe those stores will sell you good hair, but with stinthetic hair mixed with it. I think this because this is how they make money for their store and profit. Not saying that all stores do this, but you have to make sure the hair is human and is not mixed with anything else. Just plain natural and real. I also believe this because females that buy hair around there or in any other store for hair types called Brazilian, remy, or just natural human hair. After a few wash and sets it would get really stiff and have no body to it. But they bought good hair, so it's obvious the store they got their hair from mixed it with other types just to make it bad enough so you would go and buy a new pack. Meaning this is a business. You need to find the right places or have connects at certain stores so they won't jip you. You can always go natural or wear braids. Going natural is probably the best you can do to your hair because weave can pull out your hair with the braid as your taking it off, usually females would get full head weaves and it will pull out the edges of their hair. Going natural will let your hair grow more naturally. Also, it can save you money for more important things such as clothes, sneakers, hair products etc...weave is just for the style and beauty of it when females don't understand with the weave or not they will still look pretty. Natural beauty is the right beauty in my opinion.
